In the top right corner of the painting is a glimpse of the top of the stables at Rousham surrounded by white doves as seen from the east side of the Cherwell Valley. Hamel's studio is on the ground floor of this building.

Entrecasteaux is in the Var region of France. The paintings were done in the very early in the spring when the vines are putting out their new growth and the trees are about to come into leaf.

The Copper Beech is a continuation of a series of large portraits of trees that Hamel has been painting for the last ten years. This is the first copper beech he has painted on this scale.
